Ammon Days Glow Event

Kendall Purser

Ammon Days 2023 kicked off Friday night with a hot air balloon display at McCowin Park.

After a morning of rain, balloonists ranging from Utah to Washington began setting up their balloons on the north side of McCowin Park in preparation for the Glow Event that marked the start of Ammon Days.

This year's event featured 10 balloons, music, food trucks, as well as a glow toy vendor. The pilots spent the hours leading up to the 9pm light up time laying out their gondolas and checking their equipment before starting to inflate the large balloons.

As the event started, the burners lit up the thin fabric of the balloons in a teriffic display of flame, light, and color. Hundreds of participants gathered around to watch the night time light show.

The hot air balloons will launch from McCowin Park at 7am on Saturday, August 5th.

Two New Parks

In this month's Ammon Newsletter, Mayor Coletti announced the addition of two new parks to the City of Ammon. These parks had been owned and maintained by other entities, but were acquired this summer by the City of Ammon.

While Woodland Hills park, on the corner of Ammon and 49th, as been a work in progress for many years, the city recently acquired the baseball fields to the north of the park. This new addition makes the park a whopping 23 acres, and the largest park in Ammon! Recent updates to this park include new playground equipment, a Little Free Library, paved parking, and soon an additional entrance off of Ammon Road, making the park and the adjoining community much more accessible to the pubic.

The other park the city added to its repertoire this summer was donated by Integra Holdings LLLP. It is a fully developed park located in the Hawks Landing Subdivision on East Sunnyside Road. It currently boasts a large picnic shelter, playground equipment, a sledding hill, established trees, and a large open area for field sports. The city will begin management of this park in 2022. The acquisition of this park brings the total number of parks managed by the city to 11.

Mayor Coletti also said that they hope to begin improvements on Sandcreek Park (behind Cabela's) next year.

Early Snowfall Causes Damage

Kendall Purser

On Monday night, October 11th, mother nature slipped in a big surprise for Ammon residents. For the third time in 10 years we received an early, heavy, wet, blanket of snow. This ended the growing season rather abruptly and caused damage to homes around the area.

Aside from the fall flowers and late crops, many homeowners were left with large limbs down on their property. The early snowfall caught may trees with their bright fall foliage still attached, leaving large surfaces for the wet snow to cling to. For smaller, more flexible trees and bushes this wasn't a big deal, and they sprang back up as soon as the snow melted, or shook off in the wind. However, for many established trees, the added weight was too much and large limbs snapped under the pressure.

Snow accumulation in Ammon tends to be higher than our neighboring cities because of our proximity to the hills just east of town. Reports varied from just a few inches in some cities, to almost a full foot in some neighborhoods around Ammon.

Some residents reported that their electricity and internet connections flickered regularly from Monday into Tuesday, while others simply bemoaned the need to break out the snow shoveling equipment early. While the weather forecast promises slightly warmer temperatures over the weekend, there is a good chance of more precipitation come Monday.
